On Tuesday, October 6th, RTF will hold its annual picnic at Greenbrier Elementary School. We invite you to join us to share ideas for protecting and expanding the trails, honor RTF’s founders and promoters, and elect officers. We can expect many changes to the trails in the coming year, as big projects such as the Meadow Creek Parkway and RWSA sewer line replacement move forward. We welcome your input on how to protect the loop and to take advantage of opportunities to improve it.
Our picnic, which begins with a short business meet at 6:00pm, will be followed at 7:30pm by a community meeting hosted by the City of Charlottesville to discuss the idea of creating a multi-use trail along the length of Meadow Creek and on top of the new sewer line.
Dinner will be provided.
Tentative Agenda for the event:
6:00 - Welcome and introduction of Board Members
6:10 - Nomination and election of new members
6:20 - Discussion of new, enhanced RTF vision
6:35 - How to get involved!
6:40 - Fellowship
7:30 - Discussion of City trail plans
Saturday, October 31, 2009
Starting time: 6:30 AM prompt
Starting point: Riverview Park trailhead at the end of Chesapeake Street
Approximate distance: ~ 19 miles.
Approximate hiking time: 7 ½ to 9 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and hiking speeds.
Hiking route: We will hike around the City in counterclockwise direction. We will hike on completed sections of the Rivanna Trail and use road walks where necessary. We will save the wet crossing of Moore’s Creek for last.
What to bring: boots or sturdy shoes; clothes appropriate for “urban wilderness” hiking and for weather conditions; stream crossing shoes and clothes; water; snacks; personal needs.
How to participate: No cost. Just email us (dfoster@newventure.com) so we’ll know to expect you.
How to hike a shorter segment: Email us (dfoster@newventure.com) and we’ll give you an approximate schedule. Please arrange for your own transportation to and from the Trail.
Benefits of hiking as a form of regular physical activity:
• control weight
• control high blood pressure
• reduce risk of heart disease
• decrease stress and anxiety
• inexpensive – Hiking is free. No expensive gear or health club fees.
Benefits of hiking on the Rivanna Trail:
• convenient – The Trail passes through dozens of Charlottesville and Albemarle County neighborhoods
• incredibly beautiful – The Trail winds through an “urban wilderness” riparian buffer that protects our river and streams
• educational – Learn first-hand about our natural environment.
• safe – Because the Trails are so well used we have dozens of “eyes on the Trail” daily. We do recommend, though, that you hike with a buddy.
